Story to localize

We did an exercise earlier this semester interviewing students about a proposal to have the federal government make more student loans. President Obama made the proposal, arguing it would lower the cost of the loans, saving the federal government millions of dollars.

That proposal is now the focus of a fierce contest. This story in the New York Times offers a good place to start if you want to report on local angles. Here is the lead:

WASHINGTON — The private student lending industry and its allies in Congress are maneuvering to thwart a plan by President Obama to end a subsidized loan
program and redirect billions of dollars in bank profits to scholarships for
needy students.
